No time? No energy? Gym Nation can help you with the former and the latter.
Life in Dubai is busy. We get that. So does Gym Nation. The affordable gym chain is busy shaking up the fitness scene with lower prices, flexible membership and longer opening times.
By longer, we mean always. The huge 45,000 square foot space in Al Quoz is open 24 hours a day. We visit at a conventional post-work time of 6pm and the free underground car park is full. Pro’ tip – there’s a sandlot nearby where you can also park for free and get a complimentary stretch and sauna session during the short walk to the gym.
You could easily fit a fleet of cars on the gym floor, should you want to. It’s an industrial and, when we visit, busy space. This allows for a membership that’s 10,000 strong. Some of them, literally, and there are well-ripped specimens throwing weights about like gravity ain’t a thing.
However, there are also everyday people, office workers, friends and couples working out together. If you’re employing the services of a professional work-out buddy, there’s a dedicated area for personal trainers and their customers. Facilities and space are not things Gym Nation is short of – there are also rooms for classes, weights, a spinning studio, banks of cardio machines and a ladies-only section.
What it doesn’t have is the unnecessary boutique gym touches that only up your membership fees – changing rooms are basic and clean, with showers. You’ll need to buy or bring a padlock for your locker – there’s a vending machine selling these, should you forget.
We train with Samantha, a personal trainer who’s friendly and focused. She takes us through sets of push-ups, dips, squats using a combination of our own body weight (tough), the gym’s free weights (tougher) and its TRX suspension training system (hardest).
Personal training costs extra on top of gym membership, but if you have specific goals or specialised needs, it’s worth every penny. Samantha, for example, is qualified to work with pregnant women and those who’ve recently given birth and gives us helpful advice on everything from what to eat and when to the best trainers to work out in.
At the time of writing, Gym Nation is about to launch in Bur Dubai and at RAK’s Al Manar Mall. Gyms are also in the pipeline for Abu Dhabi and Downtown Dubai.
Membership at the Al Quoz HQ starts from a very reasonable AED 199 a month, which includes access to 200 classes and more than 500 pieces of equipment.
Go late, go early, but if you want to feel better about yourself, go along and give Gym Nation a try.
