My, how you’ve grown, Dubai International Airport. One of the world’s biggest and busiest travel hubs has come a long way since it first opened nearly 60 years ago.
Construction of the original Dubai Airport was ordered by then-ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1959. It officially opened in 1960 with just one runway. Fast forward to 2017 now it’s pretty much a mini-city, with three huge terminals packed with shops and restaurants.
Check out these throwback photos from down the years.
1960s – nothing much to see (yet)
1970s – classy but quiet
1990s – finally an international airport
2000s – expanding rapidly
Now – all of the lights
