If the only thing standing between you and complete cultural immersion are office hours, then the arrival of this season’s Alserkal Lates will be welcome news.
Words: Miles Buckeridge
Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, home to some of Dubai’s most cutting edge contemporary art galleries, will be holding the ever-popular Alserkal Lates evening on Wednesday, 27th September.
After work art goals
For just one night, the Avenue’s galleries will open until 9pm and there’s the chance to join two guided tour sessions (one departing at 7pm and one at 8pm) to take the art-curious and the art-enamoured alike.
Can’t make it? Asides from the regular ‘Lates’, there are some pretty funky goings on at Alserkal Avenue all the way through September. Keep your eyes peeled for must-see exhibitions such as ‘Theatre of the Absurd,’ at the Green Art Gallery and Amir Khojasteh and Philip Mueller’s ‘Good Face and Incurable Flaws’ at Carbon 12.
If you haven’t been to the artsy district, here’s a flavour of what it’s been serving up since it was founded in 2007.
Did somebody say movie night?
Get the popcorn in because, also in September, #NOWPLAYING together with Cinema Akil has put together an itinerary of independent film, showing at Warehouse 68. Towards the end of the month there are a few notable celluloid offerings – including John Carroll Lynch’s 2017 award winning movie Lucky, and Korean comedy Kogonada.
New to Alserkal for September is Sima Performing Arts studio, who will be running dance classes and performances throughout the year. There is a grand opening for the studio on Saturday, 30th September, but before that the team will be hosting a special free, open to the public, contemporary dance class to either watch, or even take part, in as part of Alserkal Lates.
If you have a craving for some artistic fulfilment, come on down – most creative tastes are catered for and any inspiration you take away is yours to keep for free.
