Do your children struggle to read or do you find it hard to get them to SIT still long enough to get through more than a few paragraphs?
Well here is a novel but supposedly quite effective way to LEAD them towards a future in which they are BARKING mad about books?
And it is also seriously CUTE…
Don’t worry, we’re not going barking mad here. The Reading Dogs UAE organisation hosts private and school reading sessions where specially selected and trained pooch pals sit down with children and enjoy nothing more than pawing through a good Roald Dahl or Julia Donaldson book with their kiddy friends.
And they are inviting you and your child to come and meet the book-mad Muttleys this half term, a great way to banish half-term-itis.
According to Reading Dogs UAE curling up with a good book and a well-trained canine companion can increase reading fluency by between 12-30 percent, help children gain more confidence in their reading abilities, motivate them to read more especially to their own pets at home.
The emotional benefits include a feeling of not being judged if they make a mistake and a reduction in stress, blood pressure and anxiety while working with animals can also help improve children’s motor skills.
Telling some tales next to wagging tails also has a raft of social benefits for kids too including helping them develop kindness and empathy, improve communication skills and encouraging participation. Doggy-tastic!
Reading Dogs UAE also runs 30-minute Happiness sessions including working with children with Special Education Needs (SEN), helping to offer exam stress relief or just needing a good poochy pal pick you up!
The centre says that spending time with a dog has been proven to decrease stress and depression by increasing the levels of feel-good chemicals – specifically, serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine – in the brain.
See, dogs are our best friends for a reason!
