Review: The Alpine Brunch at Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City

We head off-piste to sample this new European-themed addition to Dubai’s brunch scene.

If you fancy stepping in from the heat for a few hours this weekend then this cool late summer brunch could be what you’re seeking.

Being part of a Swiss brand, it’s perhaps no surprise Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City opted for an alpine theme for its new Friday foodie gathering.

And Bytes restaurant goes a long way to fulfilling the mission with authentically alpine dishes once you are past the toy mountain rescue dogs and fake snow on the DJ booth.

Some innovative salad options beckon, such as kale and apple pecorino, red Bartlett pears with goat cheese and baby spinach and super healthy quinoa salad with pumpkin seeds and redcurrants.

Salmon terrine receives an artistic delivery while the duck rillette is an early winner.

Freshly shucked oysters highlight the well-stocked seafood station while the starters menu is to commendable for being prepared to order.

It features some defining dishes that underline the Alpine, if not European, theme; think schnitzel Vienna style, and sliced veal done Zurich style with butter rosti. Rabbit Tuscany Style was our star, gorgeously paired with Parmesan polenta.

The pizza and pasta station will keep kids happy, while two more sections hit the mark for meat fans; juicy shoulder of lamb and well-selected beef are accompanied by good spuds and uplifting sauces.

Naturally, there is an extensive selection of European meats on offer too, here in the culinary shadow of the Matterhorn.

If you’ve still the stomach space, desserts include Sicilian trifle, apple strudel, German berry dish Rote Grutze, Sacher cake –Austrian chocolate torte – and Italian ice cream Zuccotto cake.

Impressive cheese shelves include Tomme de Savoie, from the French Alps, French sheep milk favourite P’tit Basque, hard Swiss Appenzeller, creamy Tete de Moine (also Swiss) and Gallic mountain cheese Cantal, plus, of course, Swiss regular Emmental.

All in all, the Alpine Brunch is a breath of fresh mountain air in a crowded brunch market.
