Dancing in the dark
Step into the shadows for this innovative theatre experience. Shadowland blends ballet, circus, shadow theatre and storytelling to tells the tale of a girl who yearns for independence, falls asleep and enters the titular Shadowland. US dance company Pilobolus brings its first full-length evening show to Dubai World Trade Centre this weekend.

Let’s torc about it
Annual Emirates Motorsport Expo will revv up petrolheads when it parks up at Dubai Autodrome today. From karting to circuit racing to off-road, all the fun of four wheels is here. Watch F1 cars, super cars, drag cars and more lap the 5.39-kilometre circuit – there’s even space for passengers in some motors – and hear about how to get into motorsports in the UAE.

Avast me hearties! All hands on deck for the Sheraton Mall of the Emirates treasure hunt. Don’t unplug for this one – contestants will have to solve a series of cryptic clues around hotel and mall, then snap a picture and post on Instagram. The player who solves all the clues in the shortest time will win a five-night stay at Trump Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. Al Jalila Foundation, which promotes medical education and research in the UAE, is the real winner, as it will receive all proceeds from the day.

“Do you want fries with that?” is one of the most superfluous questions of the 21st century. As is, are you going to order from Black Tap’s new home delivery service? The New York burger joint is giving away free fries with every burger ordered through Deliveroo, whether it’s a traditional Texan Burger or a Crispy Chicken Sandwich. Craft burgers start from AED 48. Sadly Black Tap’s OTT milkshakes are only available in-house.

Hurrah for Tollywood
Stars of South Indian cinema will be at Bollywood Parks this weekend for the the glittering South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA). See on-screen heroes of the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film industries walk the red carpet to where awards are being dished out in the 850-seat Rajmahal Theatre. There’s a full list of nominees online to prep your star spotting and the event begins at 6.30pm.

Starting from today, a Dubai language school is giving classes away for free. The Golden Age Institute in JLT wants students to take a 30-day language learning challenge. From 15th September to 14th October, people of all ages and backgrounds can attend a beginners classes in French, Arabic or Spanish once a week. There are prizes to win too.

Ok paws, colla-purr-ate and listen – lots of cats in Dubai need homes. Kittysnip animal welfare group is holding pet adoption days throughout September to re-home cats and kittens who have been found neglected or injured. They’re all neutered and fully vaccinated and in search of a fur-ever home.

Fun first aid
Parents, clue yourself up with essential first aid classes. The new King’s College Hospital London medical centre in Dubai Marina opens today with an afternoon of family-orientated first aid and CPR training. In case you need to hammer good habits home, kids will learn about how important it is to clean their teeth and wash their hands. Their reward – as well as excellent health – is a face painter, stilt walkers and arts and crafts activities that are all completely free.
