Party Centre:

These guys stock outfits for men and women – we’re told it’s the traditional garments that are selling best. Cleopatra, Top Gun flight suits anything that means you won’t bake whilst you’re sitting in the stands of the open air stadium.

Business Central Towers, Media City, and  Garhoud. Outfits starting from AED 200. Purchase only (no rental). Open all National Day weekend, 9am-10pm (12pm opening on Friday). 04 453 3373.

Mr Ben’s Costume Closet:

Inspired (we think) by the cartoon character who loves his local costume shop, we found that they have some really cool outfits and props that the other stores don’t. Fancy being She-Ra, Princess of Power for the day? They’ve got you. There are racks of creative, detailed outfits – probably more suited to cosplay. And WORD to you parents, there’s even a special section dedicated to book characters. Never fear World Book Day again!

Ben’s is slightly pricier than the rest of the party shops we checked out…but they do costume altering, rentals and delivery too and if your order is more than AED 500, they’ll deliver it for free.  They’ve got items to buy too, including morph suits from AED 189.

Rental and purchase. New location in Discovery Tower (mezzanine level), Studio City. Closed for the National Day weekend, 10am-8pm. 04 514 8187/mrbenscostumecloset.com

Mystique (the men’s store):

What’s on offer: Lads lads lads…they’ve got a bit of variety for you guys to choose from. You can become your favourite superhero, but remember – with great outfits come great responsibilities – (mainly avoiding spillages). They’ve got all the classics from pirates through to cowboys -and a few more modern ideas too. More than enough to fulfil most themes.

Full outfits from around AED 200. Purchase only (no rental). Open all National Day weekend, 10am-10pm. Ground floor, The Beach Centre, Jumeirah. 04 385 4826/mystiquecostumes.com

Mystique (the women’s store):

What’s on offer: Ladies, there’s no need for you to piece together a Roman toga outfit from stuff you’ve dug out of the back of your closet again. Mystique has stunning outfits as well as props and wigs to enhance your costume game. They’ve got opportunities to channel Star Wars’ heroines, uphold the law as a cop, or take it back in time with a strong choice of retro and period ensembles.

Full outfits from around AED 200. Purchase only (no rental). Open all National Day weekend, 10am-10pm. First floor, The Beach Centre, Jumeirah. 04 385 4826/mystiquecostumes.com

Mystique (for everyone):

This Mystique caters for both men and women, and is just a five-minute drive from Mall of the Emirates. Staff there reveal the most popular themes this year are DreamWorks’ Minions (perfect for the Sevens). They also have a range of those Carry Me costumes (starting at AED 395), which make it look like you’re being carried by an elf, gorilla or more talented sibling.

Outfits starting from AED 200. Purchase only (no rental). Umm Suqeim Street, Al Barsha. Open all National Day weekend, 9am-10pm. 800 267 88637.

Party Zone:

Branches around Dubai, including Arabian Ranches, Golden Mile Galleria Mall, Town Centre and one in Dubai Mall that sell cards, mugs, costumes, props and wigs. The make-over masters at Party Zone say that Harley Quin and Joker are bang on trend for this year – along with the eternal favourite Caribbean Pirate look. Some fancy dress fashion just never let go once they’ve got their hooks in.

Outfits starting from AED 150. Purchase only (no rental). Open all National Day weekend, 10am-10pm. 04 344 8464 / 04 325 3443.
