Friday, 3rd January
As if specially commissioned for the start of 2019 (although definitely not) the Quadrantids meteors will be putting on a special synchronised show above our heads this weekend. Dubai Astronomy Group invites seasoned celestial rock spotters and the cosmically curious to an as-yet-undisclosed Al Qudra location where you’ll be able to watch meteors through a telescope, pose your astronomical questions to experts and take part in a star decoding session. What a way to start the new year.

Ripe for a change?
The Ripe Market has a new home inside the Dubai Police Academy at Umm Sequim Street. Catch the stallholders there every Friday and Saturday from 9am-7pm. Buying organic fruit and veg and from local artisans aren’t the only lures – they fill each weekend with live cooking, workshops for adults (right now it’s Healthy Chocolate), dog shows and a show by the well-choreographed Dubai Police Marching band.

A winter’s trail
The Winter Carnival at Al Ghurair Centre is still going strong and it’s got a comprehensive selection of family distraction attractions. You can slalom across virtual ski slopes, hit peak unicorn with temporary sparkling tattoos and a carousel, frolic in the giant snow globe and bash buttons on one of the activation’s retro arcade games.

Classic cars are vying for petrolheads’ attention at Sharjah’s Flag Island. See the show of vintage motors from Sharjah Old Car Club at the outdoor destination. Kids can get their faces painted and play on the bouncy castle at the home of the seventh tallest flagpole in the world (when it opened, hence the name).
