Want to meet fellow photographers, learn new skills and pick up some fresh equipment?

Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) Photo Week is the longest-running international photography event in the region and it returns for 2019 in February. Even though January has been approximately 100 days long, that’s next week.

Launched by the photography studio and gallery in 2004, GPP Week celebrates the art of photography with exhibitions, explores its nuances with talks and seeks to elevate the art with workshops for professionals and students.

The 2019 edition starts on Monday (4th February), with a free-to-attend panel discussion with photographers behind the first collaboration between Gulf Photo Plus and the Arab Fund for Arts & Culture; ‘The Shortest Distance Between Us: Stories from the Arab Documentary Photography Program.’ Intrigued? There’s also a guided walk through of this exhibition on Tuesday from 5pm.

A busy schedule of practical workshops runs daily until Saturday, 9th February. Topics include ‘Tackling Street Photography,’ and ‘Shooting Music and Fashion.’ Prices range from over AED 1,000 to nearly AED 3,000, so these are probably ones for the pros, or those who are really serious about their ‘Grammage.

However, free how-to sessions take place in GPP’s Concrete Space. An ‘Ask Me Anything’ with Italian photographer Sara Lando (pictured) and a guide to shooting wedding photography are bound to inspire.

Definite value for money is GPP’s Fuji Film Friday (8th February), where AED 99 gets you access to five talks from a choice of 12, covering subjects like fine artist’s perspective on self-portraiture and learning to make expensive looking photos with minimal gear.

Saturday’s Market Day gives snappers the chance to pick up some pre-loved gear for less and there are also free sessions where kids can create and fill their own photo journals.

Finally, don’t miss the big finale, from 7pm Saturday, as three professional photographers go head-to-head in ‘The Shootout’ to take the best image while you the audience decide who wins.

If you need some inspiration before you go, here are some of the best photographs of Dubai and beyond for you to admire.

From 4th-9th February. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz. All events require registration. Sign up and see a full schedule at gulfphotoplus.com/gpp/2019
