Sounds of sunset
Every year, Dubai Police readies the Ramadan cannons, which fire two shots to mark the start of the Holy Month and beginning of Eid. A single booming shot also rings out at sunset every day to announce the start of iftar. If you’re around the Burj Khalifa, Eid prayer grounds in Mankhool and Al Baraha, Madinat Jumeirah or City Walk, listen out for the sound that’s been announcing iftar to Dubai since the 1960s.
Throughout Ramadan. Burj Khalifa, Eid prayer grounds in Mankhool and Al Baraha, Madinat Jumeirah and City Walk.
Eat the street
For an iftar with a twist, Asian food hall Streetery combines Thai, Chinese and Singaporean cuisines in buzzing market setting. The new restaurant’s sunset offering is a set menu from its trio of concepts – Zen (Thai), Fat Aunt’s (curries, dim sum and build-your-own noodles) and Hing Kee (barbecue and grills) – that are tried and truly thumbs-upped by us.
Streetery Food Hall, Cluster D, Jumeirah Lakes Towers. From sunset daily. AED 79 per person. 04 587 3373.

Fauna from down under
The Green Planet in City Walk has recently taken delivery of some ripper new Aussie residents. Whilst it’s fair to say that a disproportionate amount of the creatures from Down Under could kill you as soon as look it you, most of these ‘lil fellas’ are as cute as box of buttons. Kinda. For budding Steve Irwins the Australian Walkabout zone will introduce you to lizards, turtles, wallabies, parakeets, cockatiels, white tree frogs, snakes and more.
Access to The Green Planet is AED 89 online (AED 99 at the door). Sunday-Wednesday 10am-7pm, Thursday-Saturday 10am-8pm. City Walk. 04 317 3999.
Dubai’s amazing three day super sale (3DSS) is BACK. To compliment the up to 90 per cent discounts, some malls are accessorising with other offers. The Dubai Mall, for example, has teamed up with Careem to offer shoppers a free one way ride to the shops (redeemable through the mall’s app). MAF malls (like City Centre Deira, City Centre Mirdif and Mall of the Emirates) have some massive fashion flash sales scheduled.
2nd May-4th May. Stores all over Dubai.
Get the scoop
Jelly Belly Ice Cream is a whole year old. The brand inspired by the global candy phenomenon will serve customers one FREE scoop of deeply indulgent ice cream with a paid scoop. Try the strawberry cheese cake if you like your desserts transcendent.

Sit down, sit com
Arabian Ranches Golf Club is hosting a very special type of dinner this Thursday. Comedic theatrical outfit, Only Fools and 3 Courses, will dish up a Britcom, Only Fools and Horses-themed gala dinner and an interactive show. Dubai-based fans of Del Boy, Rodney, Uncle Albert et al will probably sympathise with the Trotter family’s aspirations that ‘this time next year’ they’ll be millionaires. Also, if there’s no ‘canard a l’orange’ or ‘mange tout’ on the menu…we’re walking.
AED 295. 7pm-11pm. Arabian Ranches Golf Club. 04 360 7935.
Friday, 3rd May
The caped crudités
To conquer brunch, you must first become brunch. Or at least that’s our excuse. It’s all the usual food, fun, sumo-suit wrestling, twister and battleships – but now with Batman fancy dress (with prizes) and ‘Dark Knight Rises’ after party.
AED 369. 1pm-4pm (brunch) 8pm-3am (afterparty). Lock Stock & Barrel, Rixos Premium Dubai, JBR. 04 392 7120.
Mastering the art
TV’s Master Chef restaurant is now open. Fortunately, unlike the show, you won’t have to cook your own dinner against the clock. There’s a technically brilliant menu of 36 master chef contestant inspired dishes, curated by Head Chef Margarita Vaamonde-Beggs.
Midday-3pm and 7pm-11pm. MasterChef, The TV Experience, Millennium Place Marina. 04 550 8111
