Sunday, 24th November

Beiruti banquet

The 22nd November marks Lebanese Independence Day and Al Nafoorah are in the party mood. They’ve launched a special three-course menu, which includes classic mezzeh dishes like baba ghanouj, warak enab bil zeit and batata harra. There are mixed grill mains, shwarma options and suman fillet, as well as some traditional maghmour. Those with a sweet tooth and space left in the tummy can finish on crowd-pleasing asta bil asal. Then roll us in khubz, because that’s a wrap.

Greasing the reels

This outdoor cinema brings a cunningly curated season of movies to the alfresco screen scene! Urban Outdoor cinema is in Habtoor Grand Resort, near JBR, where films glow up every Saturday to Monday. Watch contemporary classics and long-time favourites paint out on a huge canvas, sitting in the comfort of big ol’ bean bags.

A-well-a-well-a-well-a on Sunday the 24th it’s John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in classic coming-of-age sing-a-long Grease. Then on Monday 25th, one of the most popular movies ever made – watch Andy Dufresne crawl through a river of eww and come out clean on the other side in Shawshank Redemption.

Monday, 25th November

Fire in the booth

Mondays are now officially fun days thanks to Lucky Voice. The kaleidoscopic karaoke bar has launched Black Mondays, where the house beverages are AED 15, the nachos are free and karaoke booths are just AED 69 per hour. The school night set-list however, is entirely up to you. But are you even doing karaoke if nobody sings Summer of ’69?

Black comedy

The Courtyard Playhouse is home to some of the finest improv nights in the Middle East. To keep the themes as fresh as the material, they like to mix it up with different formats. This Monday sees the final episode of Film Noir: Offscript, an improvised comedy concept that borrows inspiration from the dames, mobsters, private eyes and plots of popular 50s Film Noir flicks.

Asian restaurant of tomorrow, Tanuki is offering selected dishes for a single dirham every Wednesday. You have to book in advance to get access to this amazing menu, and they’ll be switching up the featured eats every week. This Wednesday the party starts with Mango Ebi roll with crispy prawn and mango, spicy Maguro roll, Tori Tyahan fried rice and Beef Yakisoba noodles, Salmon Sashimi and Tanuki Yam soup.

Laguna Waterpark, Laguna, La Mer

Take advantage of Laguna Waterpark’s new weekday sundowner package – which allows kids and adults to slide on into the park for a proper after school chill out, at a reduced rate. There’s a new Italian kitchen in town that’s promising to deliver a legit taste of Rome. Learn the lost cheffing skills of Atlantis

Three of Atlantis, The Palm’s restaurants will be opening their doors to keen amateur chefs – for a crash course in mastercheffery. Discover the secrets of behind making a momentous Mediterranean meal at Ronda Locatelli, roll with the sushi and know things at Nobu, and learn the high-art of Lebanese mezze with Ayamna. Bar 44 at Grosvenor House is celebrating International Men’s Day in a delightful but ‘old fashioned way.’ The standard sophisticated ambiance and sky-high Marina views are complemented by a free, let’s say ‘Scottish’ beverage. We lied. For comedic effect. This listing is actually about ‘pancakes at the gastro cafe.’ For the month of November, Clinton St. Bakery is expanding its pancake portfolio to include the following spectacularly stuffed stacks – Raspberry Chocolate, Maple Pecan, Strawberry Shortbread, Apple Pie, Blueberry Streusel, Cherry Cobbler and more.  In-crêpe-able stuff.

Not Taikun girls for granted

November’s Laughter Factory tour presents at triple Brit threat. The three punny funsters will be over here, in what amounts to a ‘comedy Brexit’ – one, that actually works out in our favour. Brennan Reece, Rich Wilson and Adam Rowe will be bringing their best fest-tested gags, and serving them up to the region’s comedy fans. It’s gonna be a big one.

Isle of exercise

Kultural learnings

Kulture House likes to wear its art on its sleeve, and until the 30th November the part gastro cafe, part gallery will be hosting a pop-up, pop-art exhibition. The featured works in ‘UNFAMILIAR FACES’ are the fruit of Dina Hafez’s creative mind – elaborate beadwork portraits of historic Egyptian women. Tradition, modernity, layering, graphic design and embroidery come together with bewitching beauty in this Jumeirah-set gem of a space.
