I can see clearly now
The Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) is bringing back its popular DSF Surprises campaign. Each day between the 2nd and 26th January, a different store or brand will host a wild flash sale, with huge price reductions or exclusive offers for one day only. On Thursday get to Rivoli EyeZone at Dubai Festival City Mall – for a 100 per cent of your spend back on any purchase with vouchers for the equivalent value. Drop AED 500 on a new pair of Rays, that’s AED 500 in vouchers. Splash AED 1,000 on some Gucci shades, that AED 1,000 in vouchers right back in your pocket.

If you’re looking to spread that lounged and luxuriant vibe into the first weekend of 2020, get down to Azure Beach Dubai. The Balaeric-style beach club is now offering pool-side picnics with sharing platters. The Charcuterie Platter (AED 260) comes stuffed with cheeses, sliced cured beef, bread, olives, vegetables and fruit, whilst the Vegetarian Platter (AED 180) features stuffed vine leaves, hummus, olives, quinoa salad, bread and cucumber yogurt. Pronounced ‘yog-ert,’ not ‘yo-gurt.’ Don’t @ us.

Ripe time, Ripe place
The Ripe Market at Dubai Police Academy at Umm Sequim Street has a rich collection of stallholders, every Friday and Saturday. Buying organic fruit and veg and from local artisans aren’t the only lures – they fill each weekend with live cooking, workshops for adults, a petting zoo, fitness activities (including a ninja warrior assault course), tonnes of kids entertainment and food vans from some of the city’s best-loved eateries.

Baby’s got bargains
We can’t deny. We like big savings. And you’ll find tonnes on all kinds of baby-related paraphernalia, from cots to culottes, bibs to cribs and bouncers to 12-ouncers (bottles). Best of all, baby bargain hunters can browse the bazaar for absolutely free. The only question becomes how you’ll fetal the stuff in the car’s boot for the ride home.

Saturday, 4th January
As if specially commissioned for the start of 2020 (although definitely not) the Quadrantids meteors will be putting on a special synchronised show above our heads this weekend. Dubai Astronomy Group invites seasoned celestial rock spotters and the cosmically curious to an as-yet-undisclosed Al Qudra desert location where you’ll be able to watch up to 120 meteors per hour, streak past a telescope lens, pose your astronomical questions to experts and take part in a star decoding session.
AED 120 adults, AED 70 kids, AED 50 DAG members. 10pm-3am. Al Qudra, exact location to be disclosed upon booking. www.q-tickets.com
The hype is real. Luigia might just be the best pizzeria in town. And you can graze a selection of their high-carb cuisine at the twice-weekly brunch, every Friday and Saturday. Feast on eats like crispy frittura di calamari, margherita classica and tiramisu. Like with most Italians, il famiglia is all-important at Luigia, there’s a mini-cinema screening top toons and kids under seven get a portion of pasta or pizza for free.
AED 220 for soft drinks package, AED 320 for house. 1pm-4pm. 04 349 6950.
