Work has begun on what is possibly Dubai’s coolest mall

We can’t get enough of shopping malls in Dubai and possibly the most impressive one yet is now under construction.

Plans were first aired back in August 2015 and now Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has officially broke ground on the new Meydan One Mall development.

Although we won’t be actually be able to step inside for another three years, the 40 million square foot mall is already on course to break at least seven world records. Obvs.

Not only will this development have retractable roof for al fresco shopping during winter months, it will also become big brother to Ski Dubai, with world’s longest indoor ski slope, measured at 1km.

Not one to do things by halves, developers have also included the largest dancing water fountain in the world, topping 380m – sorry Dubai Fountain, but we’re confident you’ll still be a hit.

To draw in the haute couture lovers, the mall, slated to open in 2020, will also have a 400-metre luxury brand shopping strip called Central Canyon. Hungry shoppers can choose from more than 100 food and beverage outlets and food court joins on to a 21-screen cinema.

Although it does sound like shopping dream come true, Meydan One isn’t just about the mall and its 620 retail outlets. This huge development between Meydan and Al Khail Road will also be home to more than 83,000 people and Dubai One – the world’s tallest residential tower, standing at 161 floors high.

It will also be a great place to workout – as well as the ski slope, there are plans for 258,300 square foot indoor sports centre with courts for football, basketball, volleyball, squash, racquetball, paddle ball, table tennis, badminton, indoor cricket, golf and a whole lot more.

Outdoor sports options for cooler months will include football pitches, 5.3km of mountain biking, walking and running trails, a skateboard park and a BMX park.

Fancy something less energetic? Take a stroll by a 4km canal, or relax on the development’s own 300 metre stretch of beach. It pretty much does have it all!

Meydan chairman, Saeed Humaid Al Tayer said – “In our vision for Meydan One we have brought together all the wonders of a retail and leisure experience into one space, making this the number one destination for the UAE and indeed, the Middle East.

“With construction now underway, the Meydan One Mall is scheduled to be completed by 2020, in line with phase 1 of the Meydan One mega development.”
