Back in January, we told you about the smart initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which would help reduce the wastage of food in the UAE.
Here’s an update on how the idea has now become reality!
Taking UAE’S philanthropic vision a step further, the Government of Dubai along with Dubai municipality has officially launched the first two UAE food banks in Al Quoz this morning (19th April). Starting today, the Food Banks will be open and available to those in need, both in the UAE and abroad.
Dubai Municipality and the UAE Food Bank has partnered with 30 major hotels and supermarkets like the Armani, JW Marriott Marquis, Intercontinental, Choithrams and Spinney’s, to name a few.
The food bank will receive a majority of its donations from these partners and many others will also help with the collection and distribution of food. Rewards are on offer for the organisation that contributes the most.
So how does the collection and storage work?
In a highly organised, safe and secure manner!
Everyone that wishes to donate food including the partners will have a unique ID and password and this will be used to login and communicate with the Food Bank volunteers.
You will simply have to log on to the official website (which will be declared shortly), fill out the details about you and the type of food you want to donate. Upon receiving a request, the authorities will contact you and send a team to inspect and collect the food. Once approved, the food is sealed ready for distribution
At the moment there are two operational food banks that store dry, non-perishable food items in two refrigerated shipping containers. The fresh food – that comes mostly from partnered groceries and hotels – is collected directly and then sent to charity organisations that distribute it immediately.
Director General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Lootah stated that 30 more food banks will be placed across UAE “giving surplus food to those in need.”
This initiative aims to make Dubai the first city in the region to achieve zero food waste, while in turn helping the hungry.
Could you or the company you work for help stop food waste? Contact the UAE Foodbank and feed someone in need!
More details about how to contact and on the locations of food banks will be shortly updated.
