Your Nol card is now even more useful

It pays for your ride to work (even if you’re not using public transport), and your morning coffee too!

Words: Tally Sargent

Great news for Nol card users – that little piece of plastic just got A LOT more useful and you don’t need to do anything.

As well as taking us all around Dubai by Metro, bus and tram, the travel pass can now be used to pay for fuel at Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) filling stations.

ENOC has 118 service stations across the UAE, so if you’re in one of them and have forgotten your cash or credit cards, this partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) could save the day. Hungry motorists can also use the simple tap-and-pay system for purchases at Zoom, Pronto and Paavo’s Pizza.

Originally launched in 2009 as an electronic ticket for Dubai’s public transport network, the Nol card is now being transformed into a pre-paid electronic wallet.

Purchases of up to AED 5,000 can now be made at Zoom, Burger King, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Circle K, Aswaaq Supermarket and petrol stations – basically, wherever you see the below sign:

The move by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) plugs into the city’s Smart Dubai initiative and plans to make Dubai the happiest city on Earth through technology.

Turning the Nol card into a cash card will be welcomed with open arms, and closed wallets, according to Abdullah Al Madani, CEO of RTA’s Corporate Support Services Sector, who believes carrying cash will soon be unnecessary (no more, “you have one dirham?”)

Best news is – you don’t have to do anything! There’s no need to change or update your Nol card to reap the benefits of the automated payment systems in retail outlets across Dubai, just simply top up, tap and go. You can even use your trusty Nol card to pay your utility and credit card bills at Zoom stores.

Better yet, Al Madani hopes that more than 5,000 stores will accept Nol cards as currency by 2018.

Does it work though?

Yes! We handed over our silver Nol card at Circle K and with a quick tap, our afternoon snacks were paid for. The card scanner even tells you the remaining balance on the account, so there’s no danger of running out of credit for the trip home.
