If you don’t wear seat belt, you’re not only risking your life, but could face a heavy fine and four traffic points too. (Yikes!)
A new law that came into force in July requires all car passengers to wear a seatbelt and since it came into force, fines have dropped considerably – which hopefully means more people are heeding it.
Here’s a breakdown of the number of people fined so far this year:
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director General of the police’s Traffic Department, said that traffic studies indicate that the use of seatbelt during driving reduces the percentage of deaths due to traffic accidents.
He added that children under the age of 10 or less than 145 cm should be strapped in the back seat of cars to ensure safety and security and that it was very dangerous for parents to carry children on their laps in the front seat.

Don’t get fined:
- The basic, stick to the speed limit!
- Don’t eat or drink while driving.
- In a metered parking zone, make sure you top up your ticket before it expires. Download one of the handy RTA apps and pay straight from your phone.
- Don’t use your phone while driving
- Don’t tailgate.
