With incredible bargains to be had across the shop floors and online market places in Dubai (deep breath, some sales have already started), White Friday could be one of the biggest shopping events of the year.
White Friday is the UAE’s own version of Black Friday, the day following Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in the month of November). The term ‘Black Friday’ comes from its American birthplace, but has a disputed etymological origin.
Some sources say it’s due to the amount of traffic accidents historically caused by the sales. Others, more cheerily, state that it’s the day of the year when stores begin to turn a profit (moving from ‘the red’ in to ‘the black’).
The intense crowd swarms and borderline riots caused by Black Friday sales in the US and UK, often make news (and more recently, meme) headlines, with frantic shoppers desperately competing with Hunger Games-esque desperation over the last discounted sweater on the sale rail.
Enough with the history lesson – show me the discounts
Whereas certain popular suit retailers treat the entire year as their sale window, both White and Black Friday’s are all about the short sharp flash sale. Many outlets open from midnight on Friday, others, like many in the UAE – use the opportunity for a more leisurely three-day affair (Thursday- Saturday).
Find discounts on electrical goods, fashion, entertainment products, furniture, gadgets and pretty much anything you can exchange money for over a counter.
Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment has organised a comprehensive ‘Three-day Super Sale’ which covers 400 brands, over 1,500 outlets in malls across Dubai. The sale offers discounts of between 30 and 90 per cent. Some of the names involved are Topshop; River Island; Forever 21; Kurt Geiger; Bobby Brown; Armani Junior; Mamas & Papas; Bloomingdale’s; Harvey Nicols; Debenhams and many more.
White Friday and 3 Day Super Sale events are taking place in almost every one of the more than 60 malls in Dubai this weekend. But if the mere idea of packed out sales aisles is stressing you out, we have a solution.
The UAE’s e-retailers also go hard for White Friday with massive discounts over a range of items. It’s the perfect solution if you want to save money on a spot of shopping but don’t fancy the idea of battling through bargain-frenzied mobs.
Elabelz.com, Souq.com, Noon.com, Awok.com, Namshi.com and Sharafdg.com are some of the names involved in the electronic White Friday sales. Why not do your Christmas shopping from the comfort of your sofa, safe and smug in the knowledge that you’re doing it for less than those eager little beavers who had it all bought by June?
Expect souq.com to be showing off its recently acquired Amazon-backing muscle, with up to 85 per cent off on literally millions of items. Happy shopping!
