His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered the release of hundreds of prisoners.
A total of 700 prisoners held in Dubai are to be released before the holy month of Ramadan begins. The inmates are of different nationalities.
More than 900 prisoners have been pardoned by His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has ordered the release of 304 people serving jail sentences in the emirate. In Ras Al Khaimah, His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of RAK, has freed 302 prisoners convicted by the RAK courts.
Before the Holy Month begins, rulers of the United Arab Emirates traditionally set free select prisoners who have shown good conduct, so they can spend the time with their families.
When will Ramdan begin?
The UAE’s moon-sighting committee will meet in Abu Dhabi after the sunset (Maghrib) prayer on Tuesday (15th May). We can expect an announcement on the beginning of the Holy Month shortly after that.
