These new roads will hopefully cut traffic congestion in International City

International City Roads

Travelling between Downtown Dubai and International City is about to get a whole lot more comfortable as new roads open this weekend.

From 14th July, the newly-constructed bridge in the Al Awir area will carry 1,000 vehicles an hour and ease traffic on the junction of Al Awir and Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.

Existing lanes will widen, and the four main roundabouts in International City will become traffic light junctions throughout the phase one of the Al Awir Road Improvement Project.

The second stage of the project is already underway and that will include an upgrade to the Al Manama-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road intersection and widening of the flyover above Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from three to four lanes, allowing an extra 6,000 vehicles to use the busy bridge every hour.

Also on the works schedule is extending Al Manama Street in the directions of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Academic City Street, allowing easier access to International City. Traffic signals installed at the extending street will help in the process.

Funded by Nakheel, the AED 400 million roads scheme should help the 182,000 vehicles that currently move in and out of the area every day flow more smoothly. The developer is also looking to create more parking spaces.

There are more than 22,000 homes and 5,000 businesses in International City, in the Al Warsan neighbourhood. It’s also very close to mega malls Dragon Mart and Dragon Mart 2, where dedicated shoppers can pick up anything from a over-sized fountain for the garden to a car engine.
