Remember we were promised those new Metro trains? Well, they’re right on schedule.
In September, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that a coach-load of new trains were arriving for its metro network. Now the first of the new Dubai metro trains has arrived at the Metro Depot in Rashidiya.
Manufacturer Alstom will continue to supply the 49 remaining trains in batches from its factory in Poland and by the end of October 2019, the last one is expected to arrive.
Of those, 35 will “enhance the service level of the Dubai Metro” and 15 will serve the under-construction Expo 2020 route, after a full series of static and dynamic tests to make sure all the motors, brakes and control systems are in order.
Not much change from the outside, but once we’re on board, you’ll notice seats in the new trains are facing (like the women and children’s compartment, or some lines on the London Underground, if you’re a real train spotter). As well as making for maximum awkward eye contact opportunities, this also increases each carriage’s capacity from 643 to 696 riders.
Customised to serve People of Determination, the new trains also have handy light-up maps of the Metro’s route to keep us informed on the move.
However, the familiar shape and colours remain the same. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the RTA, adds: “The exterior design of trains will remain unchanged to maintain the design identity of Dubai metro and its familiar colours to the public.”
