UAE government declares 2019 to be the ‘Year of Tolerance’

Year of Tolerance

2019 will be a year dedicated to celebrating tolerance, along with acceptance and understanding, in memory of the late Sheikh Zayed

The Year of Tolerance will extend the Year of Zayed and will help spread the values of peace and respectful co-existence, established by Sheikh Zayed. Further highlighting the UAE as a global capital for tolerance and peace.

Focusing on five main pillars the Year of Tolerance aims to deepen the values of co-existence between cultures. To solidify the UAE as a global capital for tolerance. To create cultural programmes to build tolerant communities. To legally reinforce cultural and religious tolerance and promote tolerance through media initiatives and projects.

Commenting on the announcement, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said: “Instilling values of tolerance carries on Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and teachings.”

“Here in the UAE, the Year of Tolerance will be celebrated as a national effort towards further advancing a decades-long dream of creating a tolerant and cohesive society, open to peoples of varying cultures and religions from around the world. The UAE and Tolerance go hand-in-hand.”

The announcement follows the news that in demonstrating acceptance of other religions,  Pope Francis will visit Abu Dhabi in February and hold a public mass at Zayed Sports City.
