Did you know that a mandatory break for people working outdoors in the summer starts on Saturday?
For three months from 15th June, it’s illegal for construction site staff to labour outside during the hottest part of the day.
The directive was issued by Nasser bin Thani Al Hamli, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation and has arrived around this time every year since 2004.
Daily from 12.30pm-3pm until 15th September, the working day will be split into morning and evening shifts. Employers must give workers a shaded area to rest in while they down tools.
Firms who break the ruling could be fined AED 5,000 per worker, up to AED 50,000 if the case involves groups.
In exceptional cases where work cannot stop, companies have to give their staff cold water, salt and lemon, which health experts say help avoid sunstroke and dehydration.
This ruling means construction sites should fall silent during afternoons, but we could see work start early and finish later – all so workers are kept safer.
