If you live near Discovery Gardens, your commute just got easier

People in these communities should find getting around easier, thanks to these roads improvements.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has finished roadworks in Al Yalayis and Al Asayel Streets, improving links to Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The upgraded highways opened on Saturday (14th September) – welcome news for people living in Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Jumeirah Islands and Emirates Hills which will see space for more cars and reduced transit times.

A lot of the work has concentrated on flyovers. There are now two between Al Yalayis Street and First Al Khail Street and the Al Yalayis and Al Asayel Streets intersection) that will eventually link with the Etihad Rail Project.

Also, a two-kilometre, two-lane flyover has been created on Al Asayel Street, taking traffic inbound traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street in the direction of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The road also connects existing flyovers linking communities at Discovery Gardens and Al Furjan.

These and other ongoing improvements follow directives from the ‘Parallel Roads Project’ conceived by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Important numbers

“The project increases the intake of Al Yalayis Street to about 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.”

“It also cuts the transit time between Sheikh Zayed Road (7th interchange) and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to just four minutes,” explained Mattar Al Tayer, director-general of the RTA.

Al Yalayis Street has increased from three to five lanes in each direction, all the way from Sheikh Zayed Road up to Emirates Road. Links with flyovers on First Al Khalil Street and Al Asayel Street have been widened to seven lanes in each direction.

Hopefully, all these developments mean for smoother driving between Dubai’s main arterial routes, especially with increased traffic expected from Expo 2020.
