  • The FIFA World Cup made its debut on 13th July 1930, with Lucien Laurent from France scoring the first goal against Mexico 
  • World War II halted the tournament in 1942 and 1946 
  • The FIFA World Cup is held every 4 years 
  • Brazil has the highest number of wins, having taken first place 5 times, followed by Italy with 4 titles 
  • Uruguay won the first World Cup title in 1930, defeating Argentina 4-2 
  • The current FIFA World Cup Trophy, introduced in 1974, is made of 18 carat gold is 36.8 cm tall and weighs 6.1 kg 
  • Antonio Carbajal (Mexico), Lothar Matthaeus (Germany) and Gianluigi Buffon (Italy) have each played in World Cup tournaments

  • Oleg Salenko from Russia scored the most goals in a match, netting 5 in a game against Cameroon in 1994 
  • The oldest player to début in a World Cup final was England’s David James who was 39  
  • Miroslav Klose from Germany is the top goal scorer in history with 16 FIFA World Cup goals 
  • countries placed bids for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with Russia winning the rights on 2nd December, 2010 
  • 32 teams will compete in the tournament 
  • 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities across Russia including Moscow, Sochi, Samara, Kazan, Saransk and Kaliningrad
