Behind a blue door in Jumeirah, there’s a little blow dry bar with a big reputation.
Regulars at the LA-style blow out empire Be Bar come before work (the salon opens at 8am), make appointments every other day and head there straight from the airport (because unpacking is much easier with a tamed mane). No cuts, no colours – Be Bar specialises in blow dries, up-does and stocks international beauty goodies galore. The Italian range Davines promises to make our summer parched hair bellissimo.
There’s a hum of concentration in the salon as locks of all lengths are primped. It’s busy, but still relaxing, as there’s plenty of space at each station.
A quick check and the good news from our stylist is that there’s no dandruff, but we do have a sensitive scalp. She recommends Davines’ Natural Tech Calming Shampoo, the calming Superactive serum and a hair building ‘pak’ for dry hair, to calm the skin and leave hair revived – because scalp tenderness can also cause hair loss.
In room off the gleaming white main salon, twice we’re gently tipped horizontal by automated chairs to have our hair lathered up under low lights – no dazzle here. First a wash, then the mask applied. Back in front of the mirror, we sit under a steamer and sip a green tea while it takes effect. After a second wash, she applies serum and we’re offered a tablet with a choice of six blowdry styles. As we’re heading home from our appointment, we choose curly and hope the ringlets won’t shake down too soon. In fact our hair remains smooth, bouncy and sweet-smelling for days, before a swimming session means we have to lather up.
Be Bar isn’t the least expensive we’ve salon tried, but time saved every morning from their polished work is priceless.
