The good folk of Fujairah have a swanky new beach club they can shout about to the rest of the country.
And, being the only one of its kind in the UAE to boast a dedicated penthouse, Lava Beach Club is also enticing visitors from Dubai to head north.
The first thing you might notice is the centerpiece large orange, red and yellow swimming pool – colours in keeping with the name and perhaps a nod to the majestic Hajar Mountains just in-land.
Thankfully, those peaks aren’t active in that way, but the reputation for Lava is likely to hot up in coming months as it promotes a calendar of events, from ladies’ nights and Latino evenings to brunches and Friday pool parties.
Oh, and the daily exercise routines participated in by guests of Lava and the neighbouring super stylish Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort, of which the beach club is a part.
Although managed with the luxury hotel, Lava has a clear identity of its own.
There’s still the exclusive element – as well as that Kristina Zanic-designed penthouse you can rent five chalets with private lounge, TV, mini bar, bottle of bubbly, shower etc for added wow or familial privacy – but it’s a bit more playful in personality.
While the Fairmont’s dedicated IAMMAI pool area is more intimate and refined with a cool sculpture and dark tiling, Lava is designed to deliver the fun.
Perched along the coast from Fujairah City, close to Dibba, the hotel resort opened in December 2016; Lava followed more recently. Both fall under the auspices of Omar Souab.
“Lava beach club is here to compliment everything,” says the General Manager.
“We’re catering to guests in-house but we’re also trying to target the community from Dubai.”
As former Operations Manager of Pullman City Centre, Deira, and Hotel Manager of Fairmont Dubai, he knows plenty about drawing the Dubai crowd, and keeping them happy. Lava has also joined with resort access membership scheme Privilee, giving gratis entry to cardholders.
The Lava pool has a swim up bar and six in-pool Jacuzzis, flanked by an amphitheatre-style lounger area. Families are also welcome. Lava has a splash pad kids pool, a kids club and easy access to the beach where you’ll soon find an aqua bounce water park – another first for Fujairah.
Lava Dining is a dedicated restaurant area feeding the good vibes with Mediterranean/Asian cuisine far above the standard you might expect of a beach club. There’s also a shisha lounge.
“It’s a breath of fresh air for everyone to have a state of the art beach club with entertainment, resident DJ and great quality of food,” says Omar. “It is something that was needed in the region.”
Ideally, of course, he’ll have you making a weekend of it and booking into the art-laden Fairmont Fujairah.
With lots of black and white art-deco-inspired design, eye-catching sculptures, wall (and ceiling) art, the hotel is one of the most impressionable we’ve visited in a while. It oozes five-star plushness, but done with a creative cool that makes it stand out from other Fairmont examples we’ve experienced.
There are 180 rooms and spacious suites with stunning sea and marina views and wide balconies from which to absorb the famed east coast sunset.
Alternatively, you can do that at IAMMAI’s poolside lounge, with a generous happy hour and Arabic bites.
For other eats, Canvas is the smart all-day dining restaurant and Café Pronto offers healthy Italian-themed eating with some ingredients taken from the hotel’s garden – part of the resort’s Planet 21 sustainability initiative, that includes special benefits for Tesla owners who check into the hotel or Lava.
Fish served at signature restaurant The Copper Lobster fits the bill too, having been caught off the Fujairah coast, with oysters harvested from a nearby oyster farm.
If you wish to be good, BMW mountain bikes are available for a nearby trail, there are spin classes, sunrise yoga, aqua gym sessions, the tranquil Willow Stream Spa, plus water sports including jet skiing, diving, kayaking and snorkeling.
As for Lava, with the weather ripening nicely and wedding couples, product launches and birthday boys and girls setting their sights on that penthouse, it’s likely to get very popular very soon.
Dubai Week was a guest of the venue.
