A fancy glamping village has opened in Hatta.
Back in July, Meraas announced a AED 1.3 billion project to transform the national park near Dubai into a can’t-miss holiday destination.
A huge Hollywood-style Hatta sign 450 metres up in the Hajar Mountains will welcome visitors to Hatta Wadi Hub, Hatta Damani Lodges and Hatta Sedr Trailers.
These gorgeous mountain lodges and vintage-style trailer camp around the wadi hub are cosy bases to explore Hatta’s mountains and bike trails. They centre around a communal fire pit and barbecue stations on the banks of the Hatta Dam, where a German artist painted his huge mural of the UAE’s founding fathers. If you’re more about leaving the road and taking the trail, pitch a tent at Hatta Campsite or take a spot at Hatta Caravan Park.
Active types are going to love the Hatta Wadi Hub. You can rent mountain bikes, speed about go-karting, hang around in an adventure playground for adults, or roll in giant orbs at Hatta Zorbing. It’s also home to Hatta Drop-in, which they’re calling “Asia’s first water jump park”, with crazy slides, doughnuts and more. A full price list of activities is here.
What’s not yet open is the Riad Hatta boutique hotel. Still in the design stage, its inspiration comes from traditional ‘riad’ – houses built with natural materials around a central courtyard. Expect its spacious rooms and peaceful courtyards at the end of 2019.
Other new projects that Meraas and Dubai Municipality are collaborating on include the redevelopment of an old heritage village, with a traditional market run by Emirati entrepreneurs, four food trucks and a coffee shop. Senior Emiratis get their own gathering place, or majlis, and UAE nationals will lead guided tours through Hatta’s winding roads.
Abdulla Al Habbai, group chairman of Meraas, says: “Our projects will establish the position of Hatta as National Park and a leading eco-tourism destination, through offering a comprehensive global experience while showcasing and protecting the natural environment.”
Only a 90 minute drive away from Dubai, Hatta was traditionally the cooler summer escape for UAE dwellers. Now it looks like we’ll be visiting all year round.
Stays in the lodges and trailer park start from AED 250 a night. For more information, head to www.visithatta.com
