A day after Pyongyang tested its largest intercontinental ballistic missile, the UN The United States on Friday called for tougher international sanctions against North Korea at the Security Council.

During the meeting to discuss the North Korean issue, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said, “The United States calls on all member states to fully implement the existing Security Council resolutions.”
“Due to the increasingly serious provocations of the DPRK, the United States will present a draft resolution to the Security Council to modernize and strengthen the sanctions regime,” it was adopted in December 2017.
Thomas Greenfield recalled at the time, “If ICBM is started by DPRK, the Council has decided that it will take further action.”
“That’s what happened, so now is the time to take action,” he added.
One month after the launch of the Pyongyang intercontinental ballistic missile (Hwasong-15), council members voted unanimously on a draft resolution that would be considered powerful enough to reach US territory.
Then, in April 2018, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced that his country had become a nuclear power, arguing that it had achieved its goals by banning nuclear tests and long-range ballistic missiles.
But he returned and personally oversaw Thursday’s test, which was aimed at ensuring the country was ready for a “protracted confrontation” with the United States, the official news agency said.
Seven groups and the European Union on Friday condemned what they described as a “blatant violation” of North Korea’s obligations under Security Council resolutions.
