While Spain and Portugal are still facing an exceptional heat wave, the second in less than a month, France is also starting to feel it as fires start to ravage the south of the country, while Shanghai has recorded record temperatures. China’s agriculture and energy sectors have seized control of the country’s agriculture and energy sectors yesterday, the highest in its history, as a severe heat wave gripped the country yesterday, prompting officials to issue a series of warnings. The temperature at a weather station in central Shanghai reached 40.9 degrees Celsius yesterday, according to the official news website of the National Meteorological Service. The figure “equals the highest air temperature ever recorded in the region since records began in 1873,” the report said.

Social media users complained about the heat, with one of the pioneers of China’s popular “Weibo” site writing, “I just felt like a piece of meat was grilled when I went to get tested for Covid-19,” while another wrote, “Maybe the heat will burn the virus off completely.” Pictures circulating on social media showed workers in Shanghai’s health sector sitting or stretching on snowboards to beat the heat.
The extreme rise in temperatures hit more than 60 Chinese cities, while authorities in those cities began taking swift measures to combat the heat wave as the heat warning level was raised to red, the highest level in the heat warning system. In the country, temperatures are expected to soar above 40 degrees Celsius.

Two fires
In France, around 6,000 people camped out yesterday morning in the Gironde region of the country’s southwest, after two fires broke out in pine trees covering an area of about 1,700 hectares.
