DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Social media activists circulated videos and photos of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s visit to the Saudi city of Jeddah to attend the 32nd Arab Summit.
Activists were divided between those who welcomed Assad’s visit and those who criticized the plight of the Syrian people.
He was welcomed by the Deputy Governor of Makkah Al Mukarramah Region Prince Badr Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz along with the Secretary General. Ahmed Abul Keith of the League of Arab States and Secretary of Jeddah Governorate Saleh Bin Ali Al-Turki, Makkah Al-Mukharramah Regional Police Director, Major General Saleh Al-Jabri and Royal Undersecretary for Ethics, Fahd Al-Sahil.
“This is a new opportunity to tell our Arab brothers that we are not looking at the past, but at the future,” Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad said in press statements ahead of Assad’s visit. to the Syrian News Agency at the time.
Al-Mikdad added, “There are many challenges that we need to discuss and mobilize our Arab forces to address, including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the climate issue.”
Al-Miqdad expressed his happiness at their presence in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, adding, “We wish this summit a success and we are all going to work with our Arab brothers to determine the parameters to address the emerging challenges. Do.”
