Guterres arrived in Beirut on a visit to Solidarity with Lebanon

Date:

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Beirut on Sunday for what he described as a “visit to unity” with Lebanon and its people during the severe economic crisis.

Lebanese Foreign Minister welcomes Guterres at the Rafiq Hariri Airport in Beirut
Abdullah Pu Habib.

During his two-day visit, Guterres will meet with government officials, including President Michael Aun, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Perry and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, as well as religious leaders and civil society representatives.

It will commemorate the victims of last year’s devastating explosion at the port of Beirut and will “conduct field trips to reach out to people affected by the many crises facing the country,” the United Nations said in a statement.

Guterres will also travel to southern Lebanon to visit the United Nations Interim Force, which monitors the border between Lebanon and Israel.

“Sustainable solutions can only come from within Lebanon,” Guterres said in a video message before his arrival.
