A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center said on Saturday. The center added that the earthquake struck at a depth of ten kilometers.

Turkey has been hit by a series of earthquakes in the past, the strongest on February 6, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the same number of injuries.

The death toll in Turkey and Syria as a result of the February sixth earthquake has surpassed 50,000, after Turkey announced on Friday that the death toll on its territory had risen to more than 44,000 between Turkey and Syria.

The death toll from Friday night’s earthquake in Turkey has risen to 44,218, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

Add the latest reported death toll of 5,914 in Syria, bringing the total death toll in both countries to more than 50,000.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported that the country experienced 9,136 aftershocks after the earthquake centered in Kahramanmaras province in the early hours of February 6.

The earthquake killed 44,218 people in the states of Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adi Yaman, Osmaniye, Hadai, Kilis, Malatya and Elazig.

The number of people evacuated from affected areas has reached 528,146.

On February 6, a twin earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, the first measuring 7.7 and the second 7.6, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks, killing tens of thousands of people, mostly in southern Turkey, in addition to massive destruction.

An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck eastern Turkey on Friday evening, the Turkish Ministry of Emergency Situations announced.

According to the report, the epicenter of the earthquake was located near the city of Sivas in eastern Turkey at a depth of 5 km. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
