Canada rejects Chinese court ruling against Canadian businessman

Date:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected a Chinese court ruling against Canadian businessman Michael Spear, promising to release him.

“China’s condemnation and punishment of Michael Spear is completely unacceptable and unjustified,” Trudeau said in a statement following the verdict.

“Mr. Spever was sentenced after more than two and a half years of arbitrary detention, lack of transparency in legal proceedings and an investigation that did not even meet the minimum standards required by international law,” he added.

On Wednesday, a Chinese court sentenced Spare to 11 years in prison.

China denies allegations that Canada arrested a Hawaii CEO, one of several Canadians in China.

The spy was convicted by a court that obtained intelligence and state secrets in the northeastern Chinese city of Tandong.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications company Hawaii, was arrested in December 2018, shortly after Canada detained him.
