On Sunday, government and military officials said at least 14 civilians and a security guard were accidentally killed in indiscriminate firing by Indian forces in the northeastern state of Nagaland.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said he was “deeply saddened” by the news of a civilian being killed in a shooting incident on Saturday night.

The minister further said on Twitter that the state government would conduct a full and thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice for the families of the victims.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neyo Rio has said he will launch an investigation to “punish those responsible” for the incident that led to the “intelligence failure”.

A Defense Ministry official in New Delhi said at least 12 civilians and some security personnel were injured.

Security sources said the troops opened fire on a truck and then opened fire on protesters.

“The situation in the entire Mon district is very tense at present,” said a Nagaland police official.

Locals often accuse Indian forces of misrepresenting themselves during operations against rebel groups in Nagaland.
