Apple plans to unveil a personal journal app at its Worldwide Developers Conference, and the app will come pre-installed on all iPhones running iOS 1, and will integrate heavily with the user’s phone’s location services, contacts, and more. A Wall Report Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal based its report on an analysis of internal Apple documents about the product. Apple plans to position the app (codenamed “Jurassic”) as a mental health tool, with research showing that regular journaling can help treat depression and anxiety.
With access to your contacts, location, workouts and more, Jurassic (the name will surely change before launch) can look at data stored locally on your phone to determine what a typical day looks like. It will provide suggestions on what users can write about, including when the app detects behavior outside of its usual routine.
The app will also offer “People Discovery All Day” software that tracks how close a user is to others and differentiates between coworkers and friends.
This kind of integration with other pre-installed apps and user data sets the app apart from other journaling options on the iPhone. The WSJ report includes quotes from Paul Main, founder of Day One, a popular third-party iPhone app that was acquired by Automattic in 2021.
Apple’s documentation for Jurassic Company puts user privacy and security at the center of the design, and most or all of the user tracking data used by the app stays local to each user’s iPhone, and sometimes isn’t kept for much longer. than a few weeks.
The documents do not specify whether Apple will charge for the app. According to ARS Technia, it is unlikely to be ad-supported software, but Apple has charged users a subscription fee for certain features and services.
