The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has announced the introduction of its 2-micrometre (µm) high-power fibre laser sources – an innovation designed to set new standards for performance, safety and versatility in medical technologies, manufacturing and precision material processing.
Developed by TII’s research team, the new Thulium-based fibre laser is efficient, compact and scalable, making it particularly well suited to applications requiring precise interaction with water-rich materials. This includes next-generation surgical instruments capable of operating with exceptional precision to reduce tissue damage, as well as industrial systems requiring clean and accurate material processing.
The medical potential of the laser is especially significant, with its 2 µm wavelength enabling precise tissue ablation and supporting minimally invasive procedures that offer safer, more effective alternatives to conventional surgical methods. The platform is currently being evaluated for use in systems for urinary stone treatment, prostate surgery, advanced urology tools and other clinical applications. Its compact, modular design also allows for a wide range of future device configurations.
To drive the transition of this innovation into clinical solutions, TII has formed a strategic partnership with LIMA Photonics, a German MedTech start-up specialising in medical device design and commercialisation. This collaboration combines TII’s expertise in laser development with LIMA’s strengths in medical system design, regulatory compliance and market readiness.
