The statement issued by the Ministry of Defense further stated that the US Congressional delegation led by Senator Ed Markey to Taiwan harms Chinese sovereignty and shows that the US is destroying peace in the Taiwan Strait.

A Defense Ministry statement said China reiterated that the military would crush any attempt by Taiwan to seek independence.

Amid rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait, five US lawmakers arrived in Taipei on Sunday for a surprise visit, following US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island earlier this month.

The two-day visit is part of a larger tour of the Indo-Pacific region, according to the American Institute in Taiwan, which acts as the US embassy. Discussions centered on regional security, trade and investment and other issues.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the visit, saying the delegation would meet President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.
Visiting legislators from both the “Republican” and “Democratic” parties will be Senator Ed Markey and Representatives John Karamendi, Alan Lowenthal, Dan Baer and Omoa Amata Coleman Radiowagon.
