Ammon – YouTube has launched a new AI-powered tool that will allow users to create audio clips using the voices of some of today’s most popular musicians, a step towards trusting artificial intelligence in music creation.

The new product, called Dream Track, is a collaboration between YouTube and music artists that lets users create short audio clips of up to 30 seconds in the voice and style of one of the participating artists, via text channels, according to CNBC.

Imitating pop stars
The new tool allows users to follow pop stars like Demi Lovato and John Legend. This test feature allows users to create short songs by entering some information, including the lyrics and mood they are writing. Idea in the Create message, choose an artist of your choice, and then the tool creates an original clip of the song, up to 30 seconds long, featuring AI-generated audio from that artist.
The tool allows the ability to reproduce the voices of 9 artists including T-Pain, Troye Sivan, Sia, Demi Lovato, Charlie Puth and John Legend. Currently, for about 100 content creators in the U.S., YouTube shorts are the only tool they can use except for audio clips.

Use Google
YouTube has used Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence lab to develop this tool.

Test and learn
In a special post, YouTube said the tool is designed to test and learn from artists and viewers, get feedback and ask for ideas, and that around 100 content creators in the US will initially have access to the tool.
“At this early stage, this experience is designed to help explore how technology can be used to create deeper connections between artists, content creators and ultimately their fans,” said Lear Cohen, head of music at Alphabet.

Using artists’ voices without their permission for generative AI has been heavily criticized by production companies and regulators, who see it as tantamount to plagiarism.

See samples
YouTube released two sample videos, created using the “Dream Track”, that have acceptable renditions, but are of lower quality than Charlie Puth and T-Pain’s actual performances.
