In a remarkable achievement for global finance, 20-year-old Lakshman Meyyappan, who was born and raised in Dubai, has attained the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter, making him one of the youngest CFA charter holders in the world.
The CFA designation, often referred to as the “gold standard” for investment professionals, is typically pursued by university graduates and seasoned industry practitioners later in their careers. With fewer than 200,000 professionals worldwide holding this credential, earning it at just 20 years old is an extraordinary feat.
Lakshman’s journey towards this distinction has been anything but conventional. An alumnus of JSS Private School in Dubai, he first developed an interest in finance during the pandemic when his mother, a qualified ACCA, introduced him to accounting fundamentals. That initial spark grew into a determined pursuit of some of the most rigorous qualifications in the financial sector.
At the age of 16, while many of his peers were focused on school examinations, he became an ACCA Affiliate – a qualification that typically requires several years to achieve. He subsequently advanced his studies through PwC Academy, undertaking both ACCA and CFA programmes simultaneously. Over four years, he successfully completed all three levels of the CFA Programme while meeting the demanding 4,000-hour work experience requirement.
His role as a Research Analyst at Century Financial in Dubai gave him the opportunity to apply his academic knowledge directly to real-world global markets. Reflecting on his journey, Lakshman said: “The moment you start loving what you do, success comes to you. For me, it was about enjoying the process of learning, building strong fundamentals, and challenging myself at every stage. Completing both ACCA and CFA so early was never about racing others; it was about proving to myself what’s possible.”
Arun Leslie, Chief Market Analyst at Century Financial, commended Lakshman’s impact on the company, saying: “Lakshmanan is a great asset for our team with strong quantitative, especially statistical skills. His ability to think outside the box helps the research team generate ideas with high Alpha. He consistently brings strong technical expertise and an analytical mindset to the table, ensuring that decisions are based on a sound investment rationale. We are proud of his achievements and so happy to have him as a part of our team.”
Looking to the future, Lakshman aims to expand his expertise in global markets and sustainable investment strategies. “Learning never stops,” he added. “This is just the beginning of a lifelong journey in finance.”
Lakshman’s accomplishment also reflects Dubai’s growing influence as a hub for ambitious young professionals. As the city cements its standing as a global financial centre, his success underscores how Dubai continues to nurture exceptional talent, encouraging individuals to achieve, contribute, and inspire others.
In addition to his professional achievements, Lakshman holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University and is currently pursuing an MSc in Finance at the American University of Sharjah.
