The World League forums have sent a letter to the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) stating that they will not allow players to leave their clubs to participate in the African Cup of Nations until January 3.

FIFA rules require players to participate in the African Cup of Nations by December 27, 13 days before the start of the upcoming tournament in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6.

The World Leagues Forum said the date was “unfair and inappropriate” for many clubs and players associated with this month’s tournament.

The forum, which represents more than 40 professional league tournaments, sent two letters to FIFA and the African Football Confederation (CAF) last month, but received no response, and the fines imposed on clubs for not leaving players would be “empty”. .

“As mentioned in our unanswered letter dated November 19, that is, more than a month later, FIFA rules need to be amended,” General Secretary of the Forum Jerome Berlumeter wrote in a letter to FIFA on Thursday.

As a result, players will leave on January 3 for clubs and players associated with the tournament before this date in order to mitigate the impact of the results on the African Nations Cup.

“We consider any penalties imposed by FIFA to be offensive and invalid,” Berlomeier added.
