North Korea launches first missile of the New Year

The South Korean military said on Wednesday that an unidentified missile had been fired into North Korean waters during Pyongyang’s first missile test on New Year’s.

Coalition leaders in Seoul said in a statement that the missile was launched into the sea off the east coast of the peninsula and did not immediately provide further details.

In 2021, North Korea announced a series of successful missile tests, including a “new type” ballistic missile from a submarine, a long-range cruise missile and a hypersonic missile from a train.

The new missile test comes as North Korea has not complied with a US call for talks between the two countries.

During a key meeting of North Korea’s ruling party last week, President Kim Jong-un promised to continue building his country’s military capabilities under tough international sanctions.

As part of efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, the administration of US President Joe Biden has repeatedly announced his intention to meet with North Korean officials anywhere, at any time and without preconditions, but Pyongyang has refused.

Pyongyang is subject to international sanctions in the context of its nuclear and ballistic programs, which have made great strides under Kim Jong-un.

And North Korea has been barred from developing its nuclear or ballistic weapons by UN Security Council resolutions, but it is not concerned about the ban, which has brought it back with several international sanctions.

In 2017, at the initiative of the administration of US President Donald Trump, the UN Security Council issued three resolutions imposing severe sanctions on Pyongyang after conducting nuclear and missile tests.

North Korea has not yet shown any willingness to give up its arsenal, saying it must defend itself against any attack by Seoul’s ally Washington, which is protecting about 28,500 troops in South Korea from its northern neighbors.

Negotiations on a nuclear file between North Korea and the United States have been suspended since the collapse of the summit in Hanoi between Kim and US President Donald Trump in 2019, which required concessions from Pyongyang in return. Loosening barriers.
