Sana’a: Material losses due to “Israeli bombardment” around Damascus

Date:

The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported that an explosion hit several points near the Syrian capital Damascus after midnight on Thursday and Friday, causing some material damage.

“The Israeli bombardment occurred around 2:25 a.m. (12:25 GMT) on Friday, and was conducted from the direction of the Syrian Golan targeting several points around Damascus,” SANA quoted a military source as saying. The Israeli army has not announced this.

Agence France-Presse reported that Israel has repeatedly bombed Syria in recent weeks amid rising regional tensions amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The bombing resulted in “some material losses,” according to the source, adding that “our air defense media responded to the aggressive missiles and shot down most of them.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the blast “hit Lebanese Hezbollah positions near Damascus”, noting that “ambulances rushed to the targeted areas”.

The Syrian regime’s military said “air defenses shot down Israeli missiles fired from the Golan Heights near the capital Damascus early on Friday.”

In a statement issued by the army, “Our air defenses intercepted the missiles and shot down most of them.

The region has seen several attacks since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, followed by an Israeli offensive on Gaza.

Last month, Israeli strikes put key Syrian airports in Damascus and Aleppo out of service several times over two weeks.

On November 8, Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah positions near Damascus killed three pro-Iranian fighters, according to a Syrian Observatory for Human Rights report at the time.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights later reported that the strikes targeted an area in central Syria that includes headquarters and military bases for Hezbollah and the Syrian regime army.

Israel rarely confirms it has carried out strikes in Syria, but it reiterates its determination to counter what it describes as Iran’s attempts to establish a military presence in the country.
