Technology Innovation Institute Launches 2 µm Fibre Laser for Advanced Medical and Industrial Applications

By GST 2 min read

  • The next-generation laser platform aims to improve precision, safety and efficiency across medical and industrial sectors
  • TII partners with LIMA Photonics to adapt the technology for future integration into medical devices and surgical systems

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has announced the introduction of its 2-micrometre (µm) high-power fibre laser sources – an innovation designed to set new standards for performance, safety and versatility in medical technologies, manufacturing and precision material processing.

Developed by TII’s research team, the new Thulium-based fibre laser is efficient, compact and scalable, making it particularly well suited to applications requiring precise interaction with water-rich materials. This includes next-generation surgical instruments capable of operating with exceptional precision to reduce tissue damage, as well as industrial systems requiring clean and accurate material processing.

The medical potential of the laser is especially significant, with its 2 µm wavelength enabling precise tissue ablation and supporting minimally invasive procedures that offer safer, more effective alternatives to conventional surgical methods. The platform is currently being evaluated for use in systems for urinary stone treatment, prostate surgery, advanced urology tools and other clinical applications. Its compact, modular design also allows for a wide range of future device configurations.

To drive the transition of this innovation into clinical solutions, TII has formed a strategic partnership with LIMA Photonics, a German MedTech start-up specialising in medical device design and commercialisation. This collaboration combines TII’s expertise in laser development with LIMA’s strengths in medical system design, regulatory compliance and market readiness.

Dr Felix Vega, Chief Researcher at TII’s Directed Energy Research Center, said: “At TII, we’re developing high-performance laser systems designed for real-world impact. Our 2 µm fiber laser showcases this approach – offering capabilities with strong potential in surgical and industrial settings. Through our collaboration with LIMA Photonics, we’re aligning technical innovation with medical application.”

Dr Samir Lamrini, CEO at LIMA Photonics, said: “We are deeply impressed by the laser research demonstrated at TII and look forward to a strong partnership that we will establish in a synergistic and complementary spirit. The performance, multiple operating modes, and the system architecture of the laser are an ideal asset for clinical applications.”

This initiative supports TII’s and Abu Dhabi’s broader mission to translate advanced research into practical solutions and position the UAE as a global hub for breakthrough technologies. The collaboration with LIMA Photonics reflects a shared focus on applying scientific expertise to priority sectors such as healthcare, while fostering international partnerships that strengthen Abu Dhabi’s leadership in advanced technological innovation.
