Construction starts on two Palm Jumeirah pedestrian bridges, due June and October 2027

By GST 2 min read

Dubai's RTA and Dubai Holding Community Management have begun building two 40-metre bridges with lifts at Shoreline and Golden Mile on Palm Jumeirah.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Holding Community Management began construction on Palm Jumeirah of two pedestrian bridges, at Shoreline due in June 2027 and at Golden Mile due in October 2027, the authority said on Thursday.

Both bridges will replace at-grade crossings, so pedestrians will cross on a raised span instead of at street level. The RTA said the project is expected to cut vehicle waiting times at surrounding intersections by 50%.

The Dubai Media Office said the Shoreline bridge is on the inbound side of Palm Jumeirah, near the entrance to the island. It is scheduled for completion in June 2027.

The Golden Mile bridge is on the outbound side, next to the retail frontages. It is scheduled for completion in October 2027.

Each bridge will span 40 metres and will have lifts and supporting facilities. The authority said they are designed to meet safety and accessibility standards for all members of the community, particularly senior Emiratis and People of Determination.

Together they will handle 2,700 pedestrians per hour, which the authority said exceeds current demand and leaves room for growth. About 16,000 residents are expected to benefit.

The authority said traffic management measures will be in place throughout the construction period to maintain smooth traffic flow.

The locations were chosen after traffic and field studies of pedestrian and vehicle volumes, land use, and current and future mobility needs.

The bridges fall under an agreement signed by the RTA and Dubai Holding in March 2025. It covers traffic solutions, road upgrades and improved access and exit points for 15 areas and developments linked to Dubai Holding.

On Palm Jumeirah, the planned works also include additional acceleration and deceleration lanes at six locations.

Hussain Al Banna, Chief Executive Officer of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said the project builds on cooperation to deliver “integrated traffic solutions that respond to current and future growth requirements”.

Francis Gianni, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Holding Community Management, said the bridges would support “safer pedestrian movement and smoother traffic flow”.

According to the Media Office, the pedestrian fatality rate fell 98% between 2007 and 2025. The number of pedestrian bridges and underpasses rose from 26 in 2006 to 178 by the end of 2025.

An RTA release from September 14, 2025 put the count at 177 at the end of 2024, and the fatality rate at 0.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2024, down from 9.5 in 2007.

The same release set out plans for 23 additional pedestrian bridges across Dubai by 2030, guided by field studies of population density, land use, attractions and public transport stations. Pedestrian trips rose from 307 million in 2023 to 326 million in 2024.
