Abu Dhabi illegal car washing fines can reach Dh4,000 for repeat offenders, Abu Dhabi City Municipality has warned, as inspectors visit residential neighbourhoods under a fresh enforcement campaign.
The campaign, branded ‘Our Home, Our Responsibility’, targets motorists and residents who wash vehicles in undesignated spots: streets, open parking areas, and other public spaces across residential districts.
What the Abu Dhabi car washing fines cover
Under Abu Dhabi municipal regulations, washing a vehicle in a public place is prohibited. Residents who hire unlicensed car washers to clean vehicles on public streets or in residential areas face fines, and the washers themselves are also liable to penalties.
A separate but related offence involves leaving a dirty vehicle unattended in a public space. That carries a fine of up to Dh2,000, and the vehicle can be impounded. Repeat offenders face a Dh4,000 penalty.
The municipality did not publish a full schedule of tiered fines for each category of offence in its campaign materials. Residents should contact the municipality directly to confirm the penalty that applies to their specific circumstances.
Health and infrastructure risks cited
Municipal officials said informal car washing causes water to pool on roads and walkways, eroding road surfaces over time. Standing water also creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes and insects, and adds strain on drainage systems in densely populated areas.
The practice wastes water and leaves a visual mark on the urban environment, the municipality said, with pooled water splashing onto passing vehicles and causing inconvenience to residents.
During the campaign, municipal inspectors carried out field visits to residential neighbourhoods and spoke with community members across different age groups. Public awareness workshops were held at multiple locations, where officials outlined the risks and encouraged residents to use licensed car wash facilities instead.
Abu Dhabi enforcement authorities have a track record of acting on vehicle-related infractions. Abu Dhabi Police impounded 267 vehicles for one month during 2020 for various traffic violations, alongside Dh500 fines and four traffic points per case.
The municipality is running a parallel initiative encouraging residents not to abandon vehicles or boats in public spaces, reported by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), reflecting a broader push on civic responsibility across the emirate.
Officials stressed that using designated, licensed facilities protects neighbourhood cleanliness, reduces water wastage, and supports a healthier environment.
