Competitive calisthenics in Abu Dhabi: years of work behind the muscle-ups

Competitive calisthenics in Abu Dhabi has moved well beyond push-ups and park workouts, with athletes spending months or years on a single skill before they ever attempt it in front of judges. The gap between a social-media bodyweight challenge and what serious practitioners do is wide, and the coaches and competitors based in the emirate are clear about the difference.

Skills that take months, not days

Georgi Petkov, an Abu Dhabi-based calisthenics world champion and trainer with about 13 years of practice and roughly a decade of coaching behind him, describes the sport as a structured progression. ‘The more you have reps and repetitions with the basics, the more your body is ready to learn a new skill,’ he said.

At the advanced end, athletes work towards the planche and the front lever, both of which require the body to be held horizontally using upper-body strength and core control. The planche demands the shoulders and core to support the full bodyweight in a horizontal position. The front lever places the load on the core and lats.

International champion Charbel Khoury said athletes can spend six months to a year building the strength for some of these skills, though progress varies. Khoury, who began training in Lebanon in 2013 at the age of 13, could manage only two or three pull-ups when he started. He went on to win the Lebanese national championship every year from 2014 through 2024-25.

International champion and trainer Anastasiia Starovoitova, who began from scratch after encountering the sport during a trip to Ibiza, later competed in France and at European and world level, winning a world championship in Bulgaria in 2025. She describes the appeal simply: ‘You did 10 pull-ups, then you want to do a muscle-up. You manage a muscle-up, next you want to do weighted muscle-up, then you challenge yourself to more weights, more reps, it’s never ending.’

How the Abu Dhabi community grew

When Khaled Al Jaberi became interested in competitive calisthenics in Abu Dhabi around 2018, he could not find a gym dedicated to the discipline. Muscle Up Fitness opened in October 2022 to address that gap, and at the time, Al Jaberi said, the local community was small enough that its members could almost be counted on fingers.

The gym runs Monday to Friday from 06:30 to 21:30 and has since organised competitions, park gatherings, workshops and structured classes covering basic through to advanced levels. It also operates as an official partner of the Abu Dhabi Summer Sports programme, offering existing members access to calisthenics classes held at ADNEC at no extra charge.

Abdulla Al Hosani came to the sport from a running background after repeated injuries to his shoulder and lower back. He said his shoulder and back pain improved as he built upper-body and core strength through calisthenics. He now combines both disciplines and has moved into competition, placing fourth at his first Muscle Up Battle appearance.

Newer members such as Zayed Al Salami are already working towards the front lever. Younger athletes in the group are progressing into handstands and other advanced skills while still at school.

The 15-day transformation myth

Social media increasingly uses the word calisthenics to market short bodyweight programmes with dramatic before-and-after imagery. Petkov is direct about the limits of those claims. ‘If you’re 100 kilos with a body fat of 40 per cent, it’s impossible to become someone who’s with 6 per cent fat and super shredded’ in 15 days, he said.

He draws a useful line, however: someone who starts exercising consistently through any bodyweight programme is likely to improve their fitness, whatever the marketing around it says. Competitive calisthenics, by contrast, involves specific skills, static holds, explosive movements, weighted exercises and, depending on the discipline, freestyle combinations.

‘You don’t specifically need a place or special equipment,’ Petkov said. ‘You just need creativity, imagination and knowledge.’ But mastering the planche or a clean muscle-up demands something social-media clips rarely show: a long, repetitive build-up. ‘If you want to achieve a certain skill, it basically takes time. It teaches you patience.’

For those starting out at Muscle Up Fitness or at any outdoor bar in Abu Dhabi, the first milestone is a solid pull-up. The planche comes considerably later.
