One person was killed and 36 injured in a massive fire at a fireworks storage area in the Armenian capital market on Sunday.

Yerevan Mayor’s spokesman Levon Zardarian said the explosion occurred in a fireworks display area.

Firefighters battled a fire at Surmalo market for more than three hours this afternoon.

An explosion and fire at the Surmalo market sent a cloud of smoke over Yerevan.

A video clip circulated on social media showed thick gray smoke rising from one of the buildings, before another terrifying explosion prompted people to flee the area.

One person was killed and 36 were injured

A spokesman for the Ministry of Emergency Services, Ike Kostanian, said one person was killed and 36 injured in the blast, but it was unclear if anyone was still under the rubble. The Ministry of Health said 26 people have been hospitalized, 11 of them children.

Rescue workers and volunteers in civilian clothes searched for people trapped under layers of concrete and twisted metal.

The explosions continued

Fireworks continued to explode as firefighters and rescue workers worked amid thick smoke.

Located about two kilometers south of the city center, the market is famous for its low prices and variety of products.

Also, there was no immediate information on the cause of the firecracker explosion.
