On 2 December, the United Arab Emirates observes its 54th National Day, marking the historic union of the seven emirates in 1971 and the start of an extraordinary national journey. This year’s theme, “United,” reflects the enduring sense of cohesion and collective determination that continues to drive progress across the country.

Across the nation, celebrations fill streets and public spaces with cultural showcases, community gatherings and heritage events. Buildings, landmarks and neighbourhoods are adorned with flags and lights, blending tradition with the UAE’s modern spirit as citizens and residents come together to honour their shared identity.

UAE Media: Documenting Progress and Amplifying the National Story

Since the country’s founding, UAE media has been central in preserving the nation’s milestones and communicating its achievements to audiences at home and abroad. With the rapid shift to digital platforms, the media sector has embraced new technologies, encouraging youth participation and enabling richer, more interactive storytelling.

The UAE now operates a comprehensive media landscape that incorporates print, TV, radio and digital platforms. Together, these channels mirror societal aspirations while showcasing the country’s image globally through dynamic, multilingual content.

Evolution from Traditional Press to Digital Leadership

The UAE’s media development has been shaped by key historic moments. The launch of Al-Ittihad newspaper in 1969 established the foundations of national journalism, followed by Sharjah’s Voice of the Coast radio in 1964. Dubai TV became the first broadcaster to share Union Day with the region in 1971, while Sharjah TV joined in 1989, expanding the country’s broadcasting footprint.

The nation’s early embrace of digital tools was visible with Al-Ittihad’s digital edition in 1996, signalling the beginning of a new era in online news. Today, digital platforms rank among the top sources of information for young audiences, enabling rapid and diverse content delivery.

By 2025, UAE media increasingly incorporates short-form videos, AI-driven production and data journalism through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, ensuring content remains multilingual, creative and aligned with national goals.

A Tech-Enabled Celebration of Unity

This year’s celebrations highlight the seamless blending of culture and technology. Whether within the UAE or overseas, individuals can take part through immersive digital experiences such as VR, AR and metaverse activations, strengthening their connection to the nation.

Social platforms feature a surge of creative content celebrating the occasion. Photos, video clips and artistic expressions carry unified hashtags like #SpiritOfTheUnion and #UAE54, while content creators and influencers help share stories that highlight the nation’s achievements.

A Media Industry Driven by National Vision

Throughout 2025, the UAE’s media sector continued to grow rapidly through digital innovation and government-led support. Total industry revenue is expected to reach AED 56.5 billion, with digital media alone contributing AED 42.5 billion—reflecting the increasing prominence of new media platforms.

During the first half of the year, the UAE Media Council issued over 2,500 licences and permits. Programmes such as Media Professionals continue to equip Emirati talent with advanced skills for the digital era.

The UAE also hosted significant industry gatherings, including the Arab Media Summit 2025, welcoming thousands of experts to discuss global trends and exchange knowledge.

Strengthening Global Influence

UAE media has played a decisive role in elevating the country’s global profile by spotlighting achievements in sectors such as investment, tourism, culture, technology and the creative industries. In 2025, the UAE achieved major economic successes, including AED 2.3 trillion in foreign trade, AED 660 billion in non-oil GDP and the establishment of more than 200,000 new companies.

Extensive reporting on such developments has reinforced the UAE’s status as a global centre for innovation, business and opportunity.

A Unified Media Strategy

Commenting on the occasion of the 54th National Day, Abdullah Inayat, Co-Founder and CEO of W7Worldwide Strategic Communications Agency, congratulated the UAE’s leaders and people, highlighting the deep relationship between the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

He emphasised the value of collaboration in the media sector, saying: “We believe in building sustainable partnerships that enhance national narratives and strengthen strategic communication. We look forward to expanding our collaboration with Emirati institutions to achieve even greater success.”

Growing UAE–Saudi Media Synergy

Economic and developmental ties between the UAE and Saudi Arabia remain strong, covering trade, technology, renewable energy, infrastructure and entrepreneurial ventures, alongside shared sustainability efforts. Saudi exports to the UAE span machinery, transport equipment, chemicals, metals and precious stones, while joint investment continues to expand.

Media cooperation is also strengthening through shared campaigns, joint content initiatives and professional exchange, contributing to a unified Gulf messaging strategy on global platforms.

A Future Built on Pride and Ambition

The UAE’s 54th National Day stands as a testament to a nation proud of its heritage and confident in its future. With visionary leadership and a united society, the UAE continues to shape its path forward.

Supported by modern technology and powerful storytelling, the national media sector remains a cornerstone in documenting achievements, shaping perceptions and reinforcing the UAE’s place as a forward-looking nation that balances tradition with ambition.
