Abu Dhabi’s TII and Honeywell Partner to Drive Quantum-Secure Satellite Communications Forward

Advancing the convergence of quantum and satellite technologies for secure global connectivity

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has teamed up with Honeywell to launch a new programme focused on creating quantum-secure satellite communication systems capable of protecting sensitive data across global networks.

With quantum computing progressing rapidly, conventional encryption methods face increasing vulnerability. Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides a long-term defence by leveraging the quantum behaviour of light to generate encryption keys that cannot be intercepted or altered, offering strong protection against next-generation computational threats.

Through this partnership, Honeywell’s ‘QKDSat’ system will be integrated with TII’s Abu Dhabi Quantum Optical Ground Station (ADQOGS) to establish and evaluate complete QKD communication links between satellites and ground-based quantum networks. This collaboration marks an important step in laying the foundation for quantum-resilient communication systems that can safeguard critical information for governmental, defence and commercial sectors.

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, said: “This collaboration is a significant step toward building global quantum-secure networks in the UAE and beyond. It brings together Honeywell’s track record in aerospace innovation and TII’s expertise in quantum technologies to address one of the most pressing challenges of the digital era: how we protect our most critical information in a quantum-powered future.”

Lisa Napolitano, Vice President and General Manager, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, said: “Turning quantum science into operational capability requires proven space engineering. Honeywell’s heritage in secure satellite systems allows us to take these concepts from laboratory testing to real-world missions. Teaming up with TII ensures that together we’re advancing technologies that can deliver trusted, quantum-secure communications on a global scale.”

Operated by TII, ADQOGS is a flexible optical ground station designed to support satellite-based quantum communication trials, enabling the encoding of information on photons for the secure transfer of encryption keys between space and Earth. Its integration with Honeywell’s QKDSat platform will allow researchers to test and verify quantum-secure encryption methods in real satellite environments, showcasing long-range QKD capabilities and going beyond the distance limits of terrestrial fibre networks – ultimately paving the way for genuinely global quantum communication.

This partnership reflects the shared ambition of both organisations to advance trusted, quantum-secure communication systems and further cements Abu Dhabi’s position as an emerging global hub for cybersecurity and quantum innovation.
