More than $ 400 million in additional US and European aid to Yemen

On Wednesday, the United States announced additional aid of $ 290 million to Yemen, while the European Union announced $ 139 million in aid to a war-torn country suffering from the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the United Nations.

Washington and Brussels decided to provide this additional assistance during a ministerial meeting organized by Sweden, Switzerland and the European Union near the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mohsin Siddiqui, director of the Oxfam office in Yemen, said that if these two contributions were combined with those promised by other countries, the cabinet meeting would have received $ 1 billion less aid than the organizers expected. Report

These international donations are aimed at providing humanitarian assistance to 20 million people in the areas of health, food, water and education.

During the meeting, David Beasley, managing director of the World Food Program, said that “16 million people in Yemen are at risk of starvation.”

“We have a cash crunch, 3.2 million people by October and 5 million people by December,” he added.

According to the US State Department, the United States, which provided first aid, has increased total aid to the poorest country to $ 800 million by 2021 and more than $ 4 billion since the crisis began in 2014.

For his part, a European diplomatic source said the EU would allocate 75 million euros in its budget for development aid and 44 million euros for humanitarian aid, bringing its total aid to Yemen to 209 million euros in 2021. .

Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, imports 90% of its population’s food needs by 30 million people, including 20 million people who depend on international aid.

In March, the United Nations, Sweden and Switzerland hosted a donor conference in which about 100 countries participated and raised only half of the required funds.

The UN aims to raise $ 3.85 billion during the conference, but the total value of the pledges is only $ 1.7 billion.
